History and English literature together represent two of the most intellectually complementary disciplines in the humanities, and studying them in combination develops a distinctive ability to move between different kinds of evidence and different modes of interpretation. History teaches you to read the past through primary sources, to understand how context shapes meaning, and to construct arguments from complex and sometimes contradictory evidence. English literature develops close reading skills, sensitivity to language and form, and the ability to engage with how texts create meaning and reflect or contest the values of their time.
