About this course

Civil and environmental engineering addresses two of the most fundamental challenges of the built world: how to design and build structures, infrastructure and systems that are safe, durable and fit for purpose, and how to manage and protect the natural environment in the face of human activity and a changing climate. Civil engineering encompasses roads, bridges, buildings, tunnels, dams and water systems. Environmental engineering addresses water and air quality, waste treatment, contaminated land, flood management and the environmental performance of built systems. Studying them together reflects the reality that modern infrastructure must be designed with environmental consequences in mind from the outset.
