Geography is one of the most genuinely integrative academic disciplines, exploring the relationships between the physical world and the human societies that inhabit it. On one side, physical geography examines landforms, soils, rivers, climates, and ecosystems, asking how the Earth's surface processes work and how they change over time. On the other, human geography explores how populations, cities, economies, and cultures are organised across space, and how political and social forces shape the uneven distribution of wealth, opportunity, and environmental risk. The discipline holds these two dimensions together, insisting that neither can be fully understood without the other.
