Medicine is the most socially significant and personally demanding of the health professions, requiring graduates who combine deep scientific knowledge with clinical skill, ethical judgement, and the human capacity to build trust with patients in moments of vulnerability. Becoming a doctor is a long and rigorous journey, and the academic demands of an undergraduate medical degree are substantial, spanning the basic sciences of anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and pharmacology through to clinical medicine across specialisms from surgery and general practice to psychiatry and paediatrics. At the University of Southampton, the BM6 is a six-year full-time widening access programme specifically designed to open routes into medicine for students from backgrounds that are typically underrepresented in the profession.
