About this course

Modern languages study is far more than the acquisition of fluency in another tongue. It is an encounter with the ways that different societies think, organise themselves, create literature and art, and make sense of experience. Language and culture are inseparable, and studying a foreign language to degree level means learning to inhabit other frameworks of meaning, to read texts that assume different histories and values, and to communicate with genuine precision and sensitivity across cultural boundaries.
