Law with Criminology

About this course

Law with criminology brings together two disciplines that have a great deal to say to each other. Law is the formal system of rules, obligations, and institutions through which societies regulate behaviour and resolve disputes, and studying it develops precision of argument, the ability to work with complex texts, and an understanding of how legal systems function and what values they embody. Criminology examines the social dimensions of crime and justice from a more critical perspective, asking why certain behaviours are criminalised, how criminal justice institutions actually operate in practice, and what the social and personal consequences of crime and punishment are. Together they provide a fuller picture of the relationship between law and social life than either discipline offers alone.
