Agriculture is the oldest and most fundamental of the applied sciences, concerned with the production of food, fibre, and other biological materials in ways that meet human needs while managing the land, water, and living resources on which production depends. Modern agriculture operates at the intersection of biology, chemistry, economics, engineering, and environmental science, and the challenges it faces are among the most consequential in the world: feeding a growing global population in the context of climate change, declining biodiversity, soil degradation, and the need to radically reduce agriculture's environmental footprint.
