Marine biology and oceanography together examine the life of the sea and the physical, chemical, and geological processes that govern it. Marine biology is concerned with the extraordinary diversity of organisms that inhabit the ocean, from microscopic phytoplankton to the largest animals on Earth, and with how they have adapted to one of the most challenging and varied environments on the planet. Oceanography examines the physical properties and dynamics of the ocean, including currents, temperature, salinity, and the ocean's role in regulating the global climate. Together they provide a comprehensive scientific understanding of the marine environment.
