Central and East European studies combined with German is a degree that takes two overlapping intellectual territories and explores them together. Central and East European studies encompasses the histories, politics, cultures, and languages of a region stretching from the Baltic to the Balkans, a region whose twentieth century was defined by Nazi occupation, Soviet communism, the Holocaust, and the upheavals of 1989, and whose contemporary significance in European and global politics continues to grow. German, as the dominant language of the region's most powerful neighbour and as a language spoken in Austria and parts of Switzerland as well as Germany, connects directly to the political and cultural dynamics of Central Europe.
