About this course

Film and English together form one of the most coherent and intellectually rich combinations in the arts and humanities. Both disciplines are fundamentally concerned with storytelling: how narratives are constructed, how meaning is made, and how the forms through which stories are told shape what those stories can say. English literature provides centuries of written texts to read closely and argue about; film studies extends the canvas to include the moving image, asking how visual and sonic language, editing, performance, and genre work in cinema and on screen. Studying them together develops a genuinely sophisticated set of critical tools for engaging with two of the most important art forms of modern life.
