About this course

Environment, economics, and ecology together address what is perhaps the central challenge of the twenty-first century: reconciling human development with the limits of the natural systems that sustain life. Each discipline offers a different but essential perspective. Ecology provides the scientific understanding of how living systems work, how biodiversity is organised and maintained, and how ecosystems respond to pressure. Economics provides the tools to analyse how people and organisations make decisions about resource use, and how policy might alter those decisions. Environmental studies brings the two into contact with the real world of governance, politics, and applied problem-solving.
