Software engineering is the discipline concerned with the systematic design, development, testing and maintenance of large, complex software systems. It goes beyond programming to address the full lifecycle of software: requirements analysis, architectural design, project management, quality assurance, deployment and long-term maintenance. Software engineers build the systems that underpin modern vehicles, smartphones, financial infrastructure, secure web services, medical devices and the digital economy as a whole. The scale and complexity of modern software means that engineering it well requires not just technical skill but careful thinking about design, reliability, security and the human factors that determine whether systems actually work in practice.
