Human embryology and developmental biology is one of the most fundamental areas of the biological sciences, concerned with the processes by which a single fertilised cell gives rise to the extraordinary complexity of a fully formed organism. The field addresses questions that are at once deeply scientific and ethically significant: how do cells differentiate into the hundreds of specialised types that make up the body, how are organs patterned and formed during development, what goes wrong in developmental disorders and congenital conditions, and what do the mechanisms of development reveal about evolution, regeneration, and the potential for therapeutic intervention? At the University of Aberdeen, this five-year, full-time programme includes both a year abroad and an industrial placement, making it one of the most extensively structured undergraduate degrees in this specialist field.
