Woodlands are among the most complex and valuable ecosystems in the British landscape. They support an extraordinary diversity of species, regulate water cycles, store carbon, and provide the materials and spaces on which both people and wildlife depend. Woodland ecology and conservation is the discipline that seeks to understand how these systems function and how they can be managed sustainably in the face of mounting pressures from climate change, invasive species, disease, and habitat fragmentation. It draws on ecology, biology, environmental science, and practical land management to develop the knowledge and skills that working foresters and conservationists need.
