About this course

English literature combined with a modern language is a pairing that reflects a conviction that literary culture is richer and more complex when encountered across more than one linguistic tradition. English has one of the most extensive literary canons in the world, and the analytical and critical skills developed through reading it closely are both valuable in themselves and directly applicable to the study of other literatures. Adding a modern language means accessing works in their original tongue, understanding cultural contexts that translation can only partially convey, and developing the bilingual range that sets graduates apart.
