About this course
Geophysics is the science of understanding the Earth through physical measurement and mathematical modelling. Rather than collecting rock samples, geophysicists probe the planet's interior using waves, gravitational fields, magnetic signatures, and electrical properties, building pictures of structures that are impossible to observe directly. The discipline underpins our ability to locate oil, gas, and mineral deposits, assess earthquake and volcanic risk, monitor ice sheets and aquifers, and understand the deep processes that shape the planet's surface over geological time. Studying geophysics means developing strong foundations in physics and mathematics alongside an increasingly specialist understanding of Earth systems.
