Sociology and criminology complement each other naturally, because understanding crime and the systems societies build to respond to it requires a firm grasp of the social structures, power dynamics and inequalities that shape human behaviour in the first place. Sociology provides the theoretical tools to examine how societies are organised, how norms are created and enforced, and how categories such as class, gender, race and age intersect with life chances. Criminology applies and extends those tools to questions of harm, deviance, justice and punishment, asking who defines crime, who is policed and prosecuted, and whether penal systems achieve what they claim.
