About this course

English language as an academic discipline is quite different from studying English literature. Rather than focusing primarily on literary texts, it examines language itself: how it works as a system, how it varies across contexts and communities, how it changes over time, and how it shapes and is shaped by thought, identity, and society. Language is a fundamental part of what makes us human, and studying it rigorously requires discipline, observation, and imagination in equal measure. The three-year full-time English Language programme at the University of Salford gives you a thorough grounding in linguistics and language studies. You will explore the structure of language at phonological, grammatical, and semantic levels, and study how language functions in social contexts, from conversation and discourse to gender, power, and identity.
