About this course

Philosophy and Czech (with Slovak) is an unusual and intellectually ambitious combination, joining one of the oldest and most demanding academic disciplines with the study of two closely related Slavic languages spoken by tens of millions of people in central Europe. Philosophy trains you to think with precision about the hardest questions concerning knowledge, reality, morality, language, and the mind. The Czech and Slovak strand opens access to the literary, philosophical, and political cultures of two countries whose twentieth-century history generated some of the most significant ideas in European thought. At the University of Oxford you will work across both disciplines over four years full time, developing genuine philosophical rigour alongside linguistic competence in Czech and Slovak.
