Electronic and electrical engineering is the discipline that designs, builds, and maintains the systems through which electrical energy is generated, transmitted, and used, and through which information is processed and communicated. Computer systems engineering applies these foundations to the specific challenge of designing the hardware and embedded systems that underpin computing devices, from microprocessors and signal processing circuits to the architectures that connect hardware and software. The two areas are deeply intertwined: modern computing systems are electronic systems, and the engineers who understand both layers of a device are particularly well placed in the industry.
