Finance is the discipline that examines how financial systems, economies, and society interact, asking how capital is raised and deployed, how assets are priced, how risk is measured and managed, and what role financial institutions play in economic development. The relationships between financial systems and the broader economy have rarely been more visible or more contested than in the era since the 2008 financial crisis, and studying finance at a serious academic level means engaging with both the technical apparatus of the discipline and the political and social questions that financial decisions raise.
