Roads, railways, bridges, tunnels, airports, water supply systems, flood defences, hospitals, and sports stadiums are all the work of civil engineers, who apply principles of structural mechanics, geotechnics, hydraulics, and materials science to create built environments that are safe, functional, and durable.
