Civil engineering is the discipline responsible for designing, building, and maintaining the infrastructure that modern society depends on. Roads, railways, bridges, tunnels, airports, water supply systems, flood defences, hospitals, and sports stadiums are all the work of civil engineers, who apply principles of structural mechanics, geotechnics, hydraulics, and materials science to create built environments that are safe, functional, and durable. It is one of the oldest and most socially significant engineering disciplines, and the challenges of climate adaptation, sustainable infrastructure, and global urbanisation mean its importance is only growing.
