Human-animal interaction is a relatively young but rapidly growing field of study that examines the bonds formed between humans and other species, and the psychological, social, and therapeutic dimensions of those relationships. Research in this area has demonstrated that contact with animals can have significant effects on human wellbeing, from reducing stress and anxiety to supporting people with disabilities, mental health conditions, and developmental challenges. At the same time, understanding these interactions from an animal welfare perspective is essential: effective practice requires knowing how animals experience and respond to human presence, and how those experiences shape their health and behaviour.
