Mathematics, statistics and economics is a combination that brings together three quantitative disciplines that, in the modern world, are deeply intertwined. Mathematics provides the formal language of rigorous argument and the toolkit of techniques, from calculus and algebra to proof and numerical methods, that all quantitative work depends on. Statistics provides the methods for collecting, analysing and drawing inferences from data, dealing with uncertainty in a principled way. Economics uses both to study how resources are allocated, how markets and institutions work, and how the decisions of individuals and governments shape the economy and society.
