About this course

Theoretical physics occupies the most mathematically intensive corner of the physical sciences, concerned with developing the formal frameworks and models that describe the fundamental structure of the universe. Where experimental physics works with apparatus, measurements, and data, theoretical physics works with equations, symmetries, and abstract structures, building the conceptual architecture within which all of physics makes sense. It is a discipline that demands fluency in advanced mathematics and a willingness to engage with ideas at the frontier of human knowledge, from quantum field theory and general relativity to string theory, cosmology, and statistical mechanics. At the University of Edinburgh, this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, which gives you the opportunity to study at a partner university in another country, broadening your academic experience a
