Geology is the science of the Earth: the study of the materials from which it is made, the processes that have shaped it over billions of years, and the record of those processes preserved in the rocks, minerals, and fossils that form the geological archive. It is a discipline that combines physical and chemical science with a distinctive historical dimension, seeking to reconstruct the deep past of a planet that has been continuously changing since its formation. Understanding geology is essential for addressing some of the most significant challenges facing humanity, including finding and managing natural resources, understanding and mitigating geological hazards, and grasping the mechanisms of climate change.
