Mathematics and music is one of the oldest intellectual pairings in the Western tradition, and the connection is not merely historical. Music is deeply mathematical: in the ratios that govern harmony, the temporal structures of rhythm and metre, the acoustics of sound, and the formal properties of musical composition. Mathematics, for its part, has long used musical examples to illustrate abstract structures, and some of the most important mathematical thinkers have also been serious musicians. Studying the two together develops a mind that is rigorous and analytical while also sensitive to pattern, structure, and aesthetic experience.
