Civil and structural engineering is the oldest and most foundational of the engineering disciplines, concerned with the design, construction and maintenance of the built and natural infrastructure on which society depends: bridges, buildings, roads, railways, dams, tunnels, water supply systems, and the coastal and environmental defences that protect communities from floods and erosion. As the world faces the twin imperatives of repairing ageing infrastructure and adapting to climate change, civil and structural engineers have a central and expanding role.
