About this course

The study of languages, cultures and area studies in relation to the Middle East, Africa, South and Southeast Asia is one of the most intellectually demanding and globally significant fields in the humanities. This is not simply a matter of learning to speak and read another language, though linguistic competence is central to everything. It involves understanding societies, histories, religious traditions, political structures and cultural practices that differ fundamentally from European norms, and learning to engage with them on their own terms rather than through inherited assumptions.
