Agriculture is the foundation of human civilisation, the set of practices and knowledge systems through which societies feed themselves, manage land, and produce the raw materials for food, fibre, and fuel. It is also one of the disciplines most urgently relevant to the challenges of the twenty-first century: feeding a growing global population while reducing environmental impact, adapting to climate change, and transitioning to more sustainable systems of production are among the most important challenges facing science and policy.
