It asks why governments make the choices they do, how political ideas shape public life, what explains patterns of inequality and social change, and how democratic systems can be made to work better or can fail. It is a subject that demands both analytical rigour and genuine engagement with the world, because the questions it addresses are not abstract: they determine how lives are lived and what futures are possible.
