BA Accounting and Business Enterprise
About this course
Accounting and business enterprise is a degree that connects the technical discipline of financial reporting and analysis with the broader world of business creation and strategy. Accounting provides the language through which organisations communicate their financial health, make investment decisions, manage costs, and discharge their responsibilities to shareholders, lenders, and the public. Business enterprise brings in the entrepreneurial and commercial dimensions, examining how organisations are created, led, and sustained in competitive markets. Together they form a degree well suited to students who want to combine rigorous financial skills with genuine business acumen. At the University of Strathclyde, you will learn about the preparation, presentation, and interpretation of financial information, developing the skills to support effective decision-making by investors, lenders, management, and other stakeholders. Accounting is examined both as a technical practice and as a social and organisational phenomenon, giving you a critical understanding of its role and limitations. The business enterprise strand extends your thinking into the dynamics of creating and running organisations, covering areas such as strategy, marketing, innovation, and entrepreneurship. The programme runs over four years and includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study at a partner institution in another country. This international experience broadens your perspective on how business and accounting practice vary across different regulatory and cultural contexts, which is increasingly relevant for graduates entering globally connected careers. Graduates from accounting and business enterprise degrees are well placed for careers in accountancy, financial management, audit, tax, and business advisory services, as well as in entrepreneurial and commercial roles across a wide range of industries. Many pursue professional qualifications through bodies such as ICAS, ACCA, or CIMA, which Strathclyde's programme is designed to support. Others move directly into finance, consulting, or business development roles. Postgraduate study in accounting, finance, or business is also a natural progression.
