BSc Applied Psychology
About this course
Applied psychology is psychology with a professional orientation, developing the scientific understanding of the human mind and behaviour alongside the practical skills and ethical awareness needed to apply that understanding in real-world contexts. It is grounded in the core scientific disciplines of the field, including cognitive, social, developmental, and biological psychology, and takes them further into applied domains such as health, education, organisations, and social care. The applied emphasis means that theoretical knowledge is consistently connected to real professional questions about how people behave, what supports their wellbeing, and how behaviour can be influenced or changed. At Glasgow Caledonian University this four-year programme provides the foundation needed for a career as a chartered psychologist, as the degree is designed to confer eligibility for British Psychological Society graduate basis for membership on completion. You will study the core areas of psychological science alongside applied topics and research methods that develop your ability to gather and interpret evidence about psychological questions in practical settings. The programme takes psychology seriously as both a science and a profession, developing not just knowledge but the reflective and ethical capabilities that applied practice demands. Graduates from applied psychology programmes who want to qualify as professional psychologists in clinical, educational, forensic, or occupational fields need to complete further postgraduate training and supervised practice after the degree. The Glasgow Caledonian programme provides a strong foundation for those routes. Other graduates move into roles in human resources, occupational health, social care, education, market research, public health, and the voluntary sector, where psychological knowledge is directly relevant. Some pursue postgraduate study in applied, clinical, or counselling psychology, or in social policy and related fields. The degree opens a wide range of doors for students who want to understand and contribute to human wellbeing.
