About this course

Applied sport studies with a focus on tennis brings the scientific and analytical rigour of sport science to bear on one of the world's most technically and psychologically demanding racket sports. Tennis performance depends on a complex combination of physical conditioning, technical skill, tactical intelligence, psychological resilience and strategic preparation, and understanding how these dimensions interact is central to developing effective players and teams at every level. Applied sport studies in this context means acquiring the knowledge and professional skills to support performance through coaching, conditioning, analysis and sports science practice. At Leeds Beckett University, this three-year full-time programme is designed for those who are already competing at national or international level in tennis, or who have significant coaching experience in the sport. The degree recognises that students at this level bring deep practical knowledge to their academic study, and it is designed to connect that experience to the scientific and analytical frameworks that professional tennis development environments use. You will study exercise physiology, sport psychology, biomechanics, performance analysis, strength and conditioning, and nutrition as they apply to the specific demands of tennis, developing your capacity to assess performance, design training and development programmes, and contribute to the professional practices of high-performance tennis. A year abroad is available, giving you the opportunity to broaden your international experience of tennis and sport science. You will develop the ability to apply scientific knowledge to real performance contexts, to work within coaching and support teams, and to communicate your findings clearly to coaches and players. Graduates move into tennis performance roles, high-performance coaching, strength and conditioning, sport science support, tennis development, national governing body roles, and academy and professional circuit environments. Postgraduate study in sport science, coaching or performance analysis is a well-established next step.
