BSc Biomedical Science
About this course
Biomedical science provides the scientific foundation for understanding health, disease and the diagnosis and treatment of illness. It sits between pure biological science and clinical medicine, focusing on the laboratory and analytical disciplines that underpin modern healthcare: haematology, clinical biochemistry, microbiology, cellular pathology, immunology and transfusion science. Biomedical scientists are the laboratory professionals whose work generates the test results, diagnoses and research findings that guide clinical decision-making in the NHS and internationally. At City St George's, University of London you will study for three years full-time, beginning with the fundamental aspects of cell and molecular biology, anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and genetics before progressing to the investigation of the disease process, including its research, diagnosis and treatment. The programme includes a sandwich year in professional practice and a placement element, giving you direct laboratory experience in a clinical or research setting that develops your practical skills alongside your academic understanding. City St George's is closely connected to the NHS and healthcare sector, and this professional context informs the degree's design and delivery. Graduates in biomedical science are eligible to pursue Health and Care Professions Council registration as biomedical scientists, which is required for regulated laboratory practice within the NHS. Many graduates work in NHS hospital laboratories across the range of biomedical science specialisms, in pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, in public health laboratories, in research institutions and in the life sciences industry. Others pursue postgraduate study in specialist biomedical disciplines, in clinical practice or in research, building on the scientific foundation the undergraduate degree provides. The degree is also a recognised route for those applying to graduate-entry medicine, dentistry or other healthcare professional programmes.
