BSc Biomedical Science
About this course
Biomedical science is the laboratory-based discipline that underpins modern medicine. It encompasses the scientific investigation of disease at the molecular, cellular, and whole-organism level, and it is biomedical scientists working in hospital laboratories who perform the diagnostic tests, analyses, and investigations on which clinical medicine depends. The discipline draws on biochemistry, microbiology, haematology, cell biology, immunology, and genetics, and it sits at the intersection of basic science and clinical practice. At the University of Huddersfield, this programme is structured to include both a foundation year and a sandwich year with a work placement, making it four years in total for students who undertake the full package. The foundation year provides a supported entry into degree-level science, building the biological and chemical knowledge needed before the main programme begins. It is designed for students who have the interest and ability to succeed in biomedical science but who need to consolidate their scientific background. From the main programme onwards, you will study the core disciplines of biomedical science in depth, developing both theoretical understanding and practical laboratory skills. Huddersfield is particularly well regarded for its professional integration, and the work placement gives you extended real-world experience in a clinical or research laboratory setting, developing the professional skills and scientific awareness that employers value. Successful completion of this programme, with the placement element, puts graduates on a strong path to state registration as a biomedical scientist with the Health and Care Professions Council, which is required for NHS laboratory roles. Graduates also go on to careers in pharmaceutical research, biotechnology, forensic science, regulatory affairs, and academic research. Many proceed to postgraduate study, including specialist clinical training and research degrees in biomedical and clinical science.
