About this course

Biomedical science is the study of the biological and chemical processes underlying human health and disease, and of the laboratory techniques used to detect, diagnose, and monitor illness. It encompasses cell biology, genetics, physiology, microbiology, immunology, and biochemistry, and applies this knowledge to the clinical laboratory setting where blood, tissue, and other samples are analysed to provide the information that guides patient diagnosis and treatment. Biomedical scientists are essential to the NHS, working behind the scenes in hospital laboratories on every day that patients are treated. At the University of Reading, this three-year full-time BSc allows you to learn about the inner workings of the human body and take part in world-class research through a strongly practical course. The programme includes an integrated foundation year for students who wish to build their scientific foundations, and a sandwich year with a work placement that gives you direct laboratory experience in a professional clinical or research setting. Laboratory skills, scientific reasoning, and the ability to interpret complex data are central throughout. Entry typically requires around 120 UCAS tariff points. Biomedical science graduates work in NHS clinical laboratories, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, medical research institutes, public health agencies, and the diagnostics industry. Many graduates achieve eligibility to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as Biomedical Scientists, required for NHS laboratory practice. The placement year is a significant advantage in a competitive job market. Postgraduate study in specialised biomedical areas or research is also a common next step.
