BA Business Enterprise
About this course
Business enterprise is a discipline centred on the practical realities of creating, running, and growing organisations. Where a traditional business degree focuses on established corporate structures and management theory, enterprise programmes place entrepreneurship, innovation, and the challenge of turning ideas into viable commercial activity at the heart of the curriculum. You develop not just knowledge about how businesses work but the mindset and skills to build them. At University College Birmingham this three-year full-time degree includes a sandwich year, giving you the chance to spend an extended period working in a business environment before your final year. This placement experience is central to the enterprise approach: you test your understanding against real commercial problems, build professional relationships, and come back to your studies with a much sharper sense of how theory applies in practice. Alongside the placement, you will explore topics such as idea generation and opportunity recognition, business planning, financial management, marketing strategy, operations, and the legal and regulatory context in which businesses operate. Work placement activity is woven into the programme throughout, so the development of your commercial awareness and professional capabilities is continuous. Graduates of business enterprise programmes go on to a wide range of careers. Some start their own ventures, applying the entrepreneurial frameworks and confidence the degree has developed. Others join small and medium-sized businesses in operational, commercial, or development roles, where an enterprise mindset is particularly valued. Large organisations also recruit enterprise graduates for innovation, business development, and strategy functions. Roles in sales, account management, project management, and marketing are common destinations, as is further study at postgraduate level in business, management, or entrepreneurship.
