About this course

Business management with law is a combination that responds directly to the realities of organisational life. Businesses operate within legal frameworks at every turn, from employment and contract law to intellectual property, company law, and data regulation, and managers who understand the legal dimension of business decisions are better equipped than those who do not. At the same time, legal professionals who understand how businesses actually function are more effective advisers to the organisations they serve. The combination develops you as someone who can move fluently between commercial and legal reasoning. At the University of Brighton, this three-year full-time programme is designed to be taken with a foundation year available for those who need additional preparation, and it includes a sandwich placement year and work placement opportunities. The foundation year builds the academic and subject knowledge needed to engage confidently with degree-level business and law content. The placement year gives you sustained professional experience in a business or legal environment, where you can apply what you have learned and develop the practical skills and professional awareness that employers value. You will study core business areas including strategy, marketing, finance, and organisational behaviour, alongside key areas of English and commercial law including contract, tort, employment, and company law. You will develop the ability to analyse legal problems, apply legal principles to commercial situations, and think strategically about organisations and markets. Written communication, research, and the ability to present complex information clearly are all developed throughout the programme. Graduates from business management with law programmes pursue careers in corporate management, commercial law, compliance, human resources, finance, and a wide range of other fields. Some go on to qualify as solicitors through the Solicitors Qualifying Examination, while others pursue careers in business management or consultancy where legal awareness is an advantage. Postgraduate study in law, business, or a specialist area such as employment law or intellectual property is also a common next step.
