MA Classics and Management
About this course
Classics and Management brings together two of the most intellectually substantial programmes a university can offer, combining the study of Greek and Latin language and literature with the principles and practice of managing organisations. Classics is among the most rigorous of humanities disciplines, requiring precision in language, deep engagement with complex texts, and the ability to situate ancient works within their historical and cultural contexts. The literature, philosophy, history, and art of ancient Greece and Rome have shaped civilisations around the world, and engaging with them in the original languages remains one of the most demanding and rewarding intellectual experiences a student can undertake. Management provides a complementary set of skills rooted in how organisations function, compete, and adapt. At the University of St Andrews, this four-year, full-time programme includes a year abroad, allowing you to deepen your linguistic and cultural engagement in a different academic environment. You will develop your Latin and Greek to an advanced level, studying some of the most moving and thought-provoking literature produced in any culture, from Homeric epic and Attic tragedy to Roman philosophy and imperial history. Alongside this, you will engage with the principles of management including strategy, finance, marketing, and organisational behaviour, developing the analytical and practical thinking that modern management demands. St Andrews' reputation for academic excellence and its collegiate environment provide an outstanding setting for this unusual and demanding combination. Graduates of Classics and Management are among the most versatile in the graduate market. The rigorous analytical, linguistic, and cultural training of classics combined with the practical orientation of management makes graduates attractive to employers in finance, consulting, law, the civil service, cultural institutions, and international business. Many also pursue postgraduate study in classical studies, management, law, or related fields. The combination signals intellectual seriousness and breadth, qualities that are valued wherever complex problems need to be understood and addressed.
