About this course

Contemporary craft and creative writing is an unusual combination that brings together two distinct but complementary modes of making: the making of objects and the making of texts. Craft disciplines require close attention to materials, technique and the relationship between hand and mind; creative writing demands a similar discipline applied to language, developing voice, form and the ability to construct meaning through carefully chosen words. Both are practices that take time to develop, and studying them together allows each to inform the other in ways that can open up creative possibilities in both. At Liverpool Hope University, this four-year full-time degree includes a foundation year and incorporates a sandwich year, a year abroad and a work placement, making it one of the most comprehensively structured creative degrees available at this level. In the craft strand, you will work with materials and processes across areas such as ceramics, textiles, print and mixed-media making, developing technical skills alongside creative and conceptual ambition. The foundation year consolidates your creative and practical grounding before you move into the main degree. The creative writing strand develops your ability to write across genres including fiction, poetry, life writing and script, reading widely and writing regularly to build both craft and critical self-awareness. Liverpool's creative scene provides a rich context for both disciplines, and the placement and year abroad extend your creative practice into professional and international environments. A typical tariff of around 120 points is expected. Graduates from craft and creative writing degrees work across the creative industries, arts education, community arts, gallery and museum work, publishing, arts journalism, arts administration and their own independent practice. The combination of making skills and language skills is unusual and valued wherever organisations need people who can both create and communicate about their creative work. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in craft, fine art or creative writing, or to teacher training in creative subjects.
