BA Creative Writing and English Literature
About this course
Creative writing and English literature is a degree that positions you as both a reader and a writer, asking you to explore writing from around the world, from different eras, and from underrepresented voices alongside classic texts, and to let your extensive reading and literary analysis inspire your own original writing. The two activities reinforce each other: close reading of how skilled writers use form, voice, and structure develops your own craft, while attempting to write across different genres deepens your understanding of the choices writers make and the effects they create. At York St John University, this three-year full-time programme develops your critical literary skills alongside your creative practice, with an understanding of the power of the written word at the heart of both. The programme includes an integrated foundation year, providing a supported entry point for students who wish to develop their academic and creative foundations before the main degree. A sandwich year with a year abroad and work placement gives you professional experience in a writing-related environment and international exposure to literary and creative cultures beyond the UK. Entry typically requires around 104 UCAS tariff points. Graduates of creative writing and English literature work in writing, editing, publishing, journalism, teaching, communications, broadcasting, and marketing, as well as in a wide range of roles where strong written communication and critical thinking are valued. The skills in close reading, argument, and written expression that the degree develops are transferable across virtually every professional sector. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in creative writing, English literature, or education, or pursue teaching qualifications.
