About this course

Early childhood is a field rooted in the recognition that the first years of life are foundational. The cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development that takes place from birth through early childhood sets trajectories that influence wellbeing and learning throughout life. Understanding early childhood means engaging with the philosophical, psychological, and sociological questions that surround children's development and learning: what children need in order to thrive, how relationships and environment shape development, how play functions as a vehicle for learning, and how social inequalities affect children's experiences and outcomes from the very beginning of life. At the University of the West of England, Bristol, this three-year full-time programme develops your understanding of young children across these dimensions. You will study child development within its philosophical, social, and psychological contexts, examining the theories and evidence that inform contemporary early years practice and policy. You will explore how early years settings, family support services, and the broader workforce can best support young children, and you will develop the critical thinking needed to advocate effectively for children's rights and wellbeing. The programme prepares you for work with and on behalf of young children across the range of settings where they are supported. Graduates are prepared for careers in early years education and childcare, children's centre management, family support, early intervention services, play and learning support, and policy roles concerned with children and families. The degree is also a strong foundation for those who wish to go on to teacher training, social work qualifying programmes, or postgraduate study in childhood studies, early years, or child and adolescent health. The breadth of the curriculum means that graduates are well equipped to engage with children's needs across multiple professional contexts.
