BSc Economics and Business Management
About this course
Economics and Business Management is a combination that sits at the productive boundary between two closely related but distinct disciplines. Economics gives you the analytical tools to understand how markets, firms, households and governments make decisions and interact, and how economies as a whole perform over time. Business management applies related thinking to the practical challenges of running organisations, covering strategy, finance, marketing, operations and human resources. Together they prepare you to think rigorously about economic questions while also developing the commercial awareness and management knowledge that employers in business environments look for. At the University of Southampton this three-year full-time degree combines economic analysis with a range of management modules from Southampton Business School, giving you both the theoretical depth of a serious economics education and the applied management content that prepares you for organisational roles. You will develop skills in economic reasoning, quantitative analysis, business strategy and commercial awareness. The programme includes a sandwich year, giving you the opportunity to undertake a substantial work placement before your final year, as well as further work placement opportunities embedded in the course structure. Graduates from Economics and Business Management degrees are highly versatile and in strong demand across the private and public sectors. Many go on to careers in management consultancy, corporate finance, banking, strategy and business development, marketing and operations. Others find roles in economic research, public policy, international trade and the civil service. The combination of economic rigour and business knowledge the degree provides makes graduates adaptable across a wide range of organisational contexts. For those wishing to continue their studies, the degree provides an excellent foundation for postgraduate work in economics, business administration, finance, public policy or related fields.
