BA English And Creative Writing
About this course
English and creative writing brings together two complementary ways of engaging with language: reading literature critically and producing it yourself. The study of English literature asks you to understand texts in their historical, cultural, and theoretical contexts, to interpret how writers make meaning, and to consider the social and political forces that shape what gets written and what gets read. Creative writing asks you to apply those same forms of understanding in reverse, using craft, experimentation, and attention to develop your own voice on the page. At the University of Lincoln, this BA (Hons) programme enables you to move between the two disciplines across three years of full-time study. You will encounter poetry, fiction, and drama alongside less traditional literary forms, including non-fiction, audio drama, and graphic novels, giving you a genuinely broad sense of what literature can be. Critical modules develop your ability to analyse texts from theoretical, historical, and cultural perspectives, while creative modules ask you to write, workshop, and revise your own work across a range of forms and genres. The programme includes a sandwich year with a work placement, giving you the opportunity to apply your skills in a professional environment, whether in publishing, education, media, communications, or another writing-adjacent field. Entry typically requires around 120 UCAS tariff points. Graduates go on to careers in publishing, journalism, copywriting, communications, teaching, marketing, arts administration, and broadcast media. The analytical rigour and communication skills the degree develops are transferable across a very wide range of sectors. Many students also continue to postgraduate study in creative writing, English literature, or education, or pursue further qualifications such as a PGCE.
