About this course

English and film are two of the most significant storytelling traditions in modern culture, and they have always been in dialogue with each other. Literature provided much of the raw material that early cinema adapted, and the techniques of film have in turn influenced how novelists and poets think about time, perspective, and the image. Studying both disciplines together allows you to bring the tools of literary criticism to bear on cinema, and to read novels and poetry with an awareness of how the visual language of film has changed the way we imagine narrative. At the University of Salford this three-year, full-time programme explores the richness of literature and film in their critical and creative contexts, examining both art forms individually and the relationship between them. You will develop skills in close reading, textual analysis, and critical argument across the full range of literary forms, from poetry and fiction to drama and non-fiction, alongside the history, theory, and analysis of cinema and moving image culture. Salford's location in Greater Manchester, a city with a significant media presence including BBC and ITV facilities, adds a dimension of professional relevance to the programme's engagement with film and visual culture. Graduates of English and film move into careers across a wide range of fields. Many work in publishing, journalism, media production, film criticism, education, communications, and the cultural sector. Others move into screenwriting, script editing, arts administration, or broadcasting. The analytical and writing skills the degree develops are valued in the civil service, law, marketing, public relations, and many other professional contexts where the ability to understand and communicate complex material is important. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in English literature, film studies, creative writing, journalism, or media studies, developing a specialist direction for a career in research, writing, or the media industries.
