About this course

English and Spanish at the University of St Andrews is a degree that unites two of the world's most widely studied languages and their associated literary and cultural traditions. The MA (Hons) in English will teach you to closely read texts across a range of genres and historical eras, and to consider the ideas, human values, and historical forces that have helped shape literature, while Spanish gives you access to a richly diverse tradition spanning medieval Castilian poetry, the Golden Age, modern Spanish novels and cinema, and the vast corpus of Latin American literature. This four-year full-time programme develops your skills in literary close reading and critical analysis in English alongside advanced Spanish language proficiency and literary study. You will read widely across both traditions, engage with major critical debates, and develop the analytical and writing abilities that characterise high-level literary study at a research-intensive university. A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you extended immersion in a Spanish-speaking environment and the opportunity to study literature and culture in a different national context. Entry typically requires around 200 UCAS tariff points. Graduates of English and Spanish work in publishing, journalism, teaching, translation, cultural institutions, the diplomatic service, international business, and a wide range of professional roles where the combination of advanced literary sensibility and Spanish language ability is valued. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in English literature, Hispanic studies, comparative literature, or translation.
