BA English
About this course
English as an academic discipline encompasses the study of language in all its richness, from the historical development of the English language and its structures and varieties to the critical analysis of literature across centuries and cultures. It develops two intertwined capabilities: linguistic understanding and literary interpretation, both demanding close attention to how language works and what it does. Studying English is not simply about enjoying books, though that matters; it is about learning to read with precision and sophistication, to understand the formal and rhetorical choices that shape texts, and to write with clarity, argument and style. At Edge Hill University, this three-year programme invites you to immerse yourself in language, critical thinking and linguistic discovery, to explore new worlds in celebrated works of literature and to sharpen your skills in communication, research and self-expression in both language and literature. The degree includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and work placement opportunities, giving you structured routes to develop professional experience and international perspective alongside your academic study. You will study literary texts from a range of periods and genres, engage with critical theory, analyse language from sociolinguistic and stylistic perspectives and develop your own writing through workshops and independent projects. Edge Hill has a strong creative writing culture alongside its literary and linguistic study, and the programme reflects a commitment to the vitality of language and literature as living practices rather than purely historical objects. Graduates go on to careers in publishing, journalism, copywriting and content creation, teaching, the civil service, public relations, marketing, broadcasting, arts administration and many other fields where strong literacy and communication skills are central. Further study in English, creative writing, publishing, journalism or education is also a common route.
