MA English Language/ Greek
About this course
English language and Greek is a combination that places two very different but complementary linguistic and cultural worlds in dialogue. English language and linguistics is the systematic study of the structure, history, variation, and social functions of the English language, asking what all of this reveals about culture, society, and human communication more broadly. Greek, whether modern, ancient, or both, opens access to one of the most significant cultural and intellectual traditions in world history, from the philosophy of Plato and the drama of Sophocles to the literature and culture of contemporary Greece. At the University of Glasgow this four-year full-time degree develops your expertise in English language and linguistics alongside your Greek language skills and cultural knowledge. In English language you will study topics including the history of English, sociolinguistics, phonology, syntax, and discourse analysis. In Greek you will develop your language proficiency and engage with the literature, history, and culture of the Greek-speaking world. The degree includes a year abroad, which is particularly significant for the Greek component, giving you the opportunity to immerse yourself in the language and culture of Greece or to study classical material in a different academic environment. The typical entry tariff of 152 points reflects the academic expectations of the Glasgow programme. Graduates of English language and Greek programmes develop skills in linguistic analysis, literary interpretation, cultural understanding, and historical research that transfer across many professional contexts. Careers in education, translation, journalism, publishing, classical studies, heritage, and cultural organisations are all accessible. The Greek dimension is particularly valuable for those interested in Byzantine studies, Orthodox Christian culture, or the ancient world. Postgraduate study in linguistics, classical studies, translation, or education is a natural continuation for those seeking further depth or academic careers.
