BA English Language
About this course
English language study examines language as a system, a social practice, and a constantly changing phenomenon. It asks how language is structured at every level, from the sounds and words we use to the grammatical patterns and pragmatic conventions that govern what we say and how we say it. It also investigates how language varies across communities, how it changes across time, how children acquire it, and how it is used in literature, media, professional contexts, and everyday conversation. Linguistics, the science that underpins the discipline, provides rigorous tools for this analysis and connects English language study to broader questions about the nature of human cognition and communication. At Liverpool Hope this three-year full-time degree takes advantage of one of the UK's most linguistically rich environments. Liverpool is a city of distinct accents and dialects, a long history of multilingualism, and a surrounding region with deep linguistic diversity, from the bilingual heritage of Chinatown to the Viking influences detectable in place names across the Wirral. This environment provides a living laboratory for the study of language variation and change that brings the curriculum vividly to life. You will study the structures, histories, and uses of language systematically, developing analytical skills alongside your knowledge of how English specifically functions across a range of contexts. A sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement experience are all built into the programme, giving you professional experience, international exposure, and a portfolio alongside your academic knowledge. Graduates move into careers in education, publishing, journalism, communications, speech and language support roles, public relations, and the creative industries. Many also go on to postgraduate study in linguistics, applied linguistics, language education, or speech and language therapy training.
